Prepare For Painting The Exteriors Of The House

By: Jerzy Roald

If you hire professional painting contractors then they will take care of everything that is required for painting the house. They are well versed and experienced and another advantage is that there are many high and unreachable parts of the house, which need professional scaffolding and expertise. Having said that if you are undertaking the project yourself here are a few considerations.

Painting the house from the exteriors is very different from painting the interiors as the exterior walls have to face the weather which can be extreme at times. Also you need to make sure that the walls are well sealed against water, mildew, wind, dampness and general wear and tear.

After this you need to estimate the amount of paint that you will need and you can do so by multiplying the length of each wall with its height. After that you need to add 25% to 30% and don’t worry if there is some left behind as it always comes handy for touchups. Also paint manufacturers make our lives very easy by listing instructions on the cans and how much to use.

It is important that you buy good quality paint as this will last for a long time. You will generally pay a higher price for a good quality paint, but it is all worth it in the end.

You will also need good, sturdy ladders that will support you and the paint tools. Make sure they are the best as they are what hold you up. Now you wouldn’t want to be on the last step trying to reach a particularly difficult step with a bucket full of paint.

It is very important to get that great finish that you buy good quality brushes and rollers, the ones that are used for the exteriors are specially designed and are less delicate than the ones that are inside the house. Also you will need to buy the sandpaper, scrapers, exterior grade caulk and exterior grade putty.

Make sure you buy masking tape and get drop cloths to protect the stuff that you don’t want to get plastered with paint like walkways, plants, cars and even the neighbour’s property.

For some great exterior paint for the woodwork you could use alkyd such as oil based paint. It dries slowly and is harder to use, but it’s a lot tougher and so is more durable. It is a good option for places that get a lot of wear like the doors and their trims, porches and banisters.
