hi frank. .. these interlocking bricks do they need filling to keep them together or is it as long as they interlock? also i would like to know how much it would take to redo a bathroom just to have the essential instant hotwater shower, wall and floor finishings on a very tight budget.

    1. frank Avatar

      Hi Naomi..

Interlocking bricks dont need any joining mortar. They interlock through a tongue and groove design.
For hot water shower prices, check here[scroll to the bottom]
      https://www.a4architect.com/2011/10/12/a4architect-com-construction-material-price-index/
For wall and floor finishes, visit Kijabe street-there are numerous ceramic tile shops there.
With this info, you will be in a position to determine your budget since all these products have a wide range of pricing.

A great article indeed. Very interested in interlocking bricks technology. Is it acceptable by the kenya government regulation. Is it also firm enough to raise a house one floor up. Where can one buy the manual brick making machine and be trained in how to use it in Nairobi

    1. frank Avatar

Hi George. You can contact Makiga Engineering

Good job and good advices from ur article. My question is can steel be used for roofing instead of timber on versatile mabatis. Which is cheaper timber or steel.

    1. frank Avatar

Thanks anne. Steel is increasingly being used for trusses instead of roofing. The cost savings depend on the span , shape and pitch of the roof.

Thanks Frank. A residential house using the hip style of roofing with versatile mabatis can it work.

    1. frank Avatar

yes it can. You will need to consult a structural engineer to design the trusses for you

Im a trained interior designer with 7 years experience, im running a small firm “INTERIOR CONSULT. I studied for a diploma in interior design at BIFA- Buruburu institute of fine Arts -3yrs Regular Fulltime.

Wanted to find from you whether there is any recognized body that registers Interior designers in Kenya or Any registered Architects who can agree to form a consortium with my Company.
Im considering doing this to improve my cv and esp the requirements for tendering and coperate jobs.

    Kindly Advice.

    Hello Frank,
I have a 1.5 acre piece of land next to Syokimau a place called Katani. It is approximately 8 kilometres from Mombasa rd going through Syokimau.
i would like to develop this land, have some houses built within a gated community( im thinking about 15 units of 3 bedroom maissonettes- probably Buruburu style), something tastefull..cabro paved, swimming pool, the works!
From your experience, is this viable? Would the ROI make sense?
I dont have the money but the property has a title that could be used as chattel.

hi frank. mazeras is suitable for which floor finishings?

    1. frank Avatar

mazeras is suitable for residential or recreational facility floor finishes.

  16. James Avatar

So, when do you think you can start constructing the houses using your company “Fundis”(Labour)
Do you also think Kenyans who own land and are somehow unable to raise buildings could easily get your help for financing and completing the house?
    Which are your contact banks?
Also do you have typical building plans (Profiles) that you encourage people to adopt depending on location and space or taste for that matter

What is the current land value (estimates) – one acre in Ngong about 500 m from the tarmac? I would like to invest in rental houses/apartments and I am trying to see if investing in Ngong is a good option.

    1. Francis Gichuhi Avatar

assuming a 1/8th is kes 2.5m, then an acre will be 20m. A licenced land valuer would be best placed to give a better valuation.
